SUMMARY
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you are encountering an issue with your HYFT60SP Wheeled Grass Trimmer, there are several possible solutions that could resolve this for you. Scroll down to see if your issue is listed below, and for the suggested resolution.
Please Note - Where necessary, all corrective actions should be carried out by suitably qualified persons.
Engine Does Not Start / Runs Poorly
Here are several possible issues that can cause your Wheeled Trimmer's engine not to start, or run poorly:
- Throttle Lever / Wire
You should first check your throttle lever and wire - if there is any defect or damage present, the affected component should be replaced prior to operating your HYFT60SP Wheeled Grass Trimmer - see the Power Spares website for replacement components.
If there is no damage/defect evident, ensure throttle lever is in the correct position - if not, move lever to correct position and attempt to re-start. See the video at the top of this page (beginning at 14:12) for further detail.
- Fuel / Carburettor
Next, check the fuel level in the tank; if this is low or empty, add fuel and attempt to restart your engine. Alternatively, if the fuel level is adequate, it is possible the engine has become flooded, and you should allow 5-10 minutes before attempting to restart.
Fuel can also become "stale" if left in the tank for extended periods (28> days) - for this reason we always recommend draining the fuel tank if storing your machine for extended periods. Stale fuel will appear darker or "muddier" in appearance, and may even present an odour not typical of normal, "fresh" fuel; if you suspect the fuel in your has become stale, drain thoroughly and re-fuel with fresh, unleaded petrol.
Stale petrol can also cause your fuel line or carburettor to become dirty, which can eventually cause engine failure. To clean the fuel line, first drain your HYFT60SP before disconnecting, and gently run a pipe cleaner through until clear, followed by some clean fuel, before reattaching.
To clean the carburettor, running through with any reputable carburettor-cleaner from your local hardware store will be adequate; however, if the carburettor has become damaged due to poor fuel quality, it will require replacing - this can be arranged under warranty at our service centre, or if you would prefer to do this yourself, replacement carburettors are available from our spare parts website: Power Spares.
If your fuel is not stale, it is possible that your carburettor requires adjustment - this can be arranged under warranty at our service centre.
- Spark Plug / Air Filter
Check your spark plug to ensure it has not become disconnected or incorrectly gapped - as this can also be a cause of engine failure. If it has become dirty, wipe clean and refit; alternatively, if there is a defect present or it has become damaged - replace.
You should also check your air filter and (like the spark plug) if it has become dirty, clean and refit, or if it cannot be adequately cleaned - replace.
Replacement spark plugs and air filters are available from our spare parts website: Power Spares.
Engine Overheating
⚠️
Please note - if your HYFT60SP's engine is overheating, cease operating and do NOT take any action until it has sufficiently cooled.
- Oil Level
First check your machine's oil level; if it is low, add oil as required (see video above or your operating manual for further detail).
- Cooling System Blockage/Clogged
Next, check that your engine's cooling system has not become clogged, taking care to clean the debris system, engine screen, and cooling fins.
- Carburettor
If your oil levels are sufficient and there is no blockage or clogging evident within your machine's cooling system, it is possible that the carburettor is requires adjusting - carburettor adjustment can be arranged under warranty at our service centre.
Trimmer Vibrates Excessively
Whilst there will be a slight amount of vibration caused by the operating of your HYFT60SP, this should not be sufficient to affect the running of your machine or expose the operator to any undue risk; if your machine is producing excessive vibration, see below for possible cause and resolution:
- Set screws for Trimmer Head loose / Other nut and bolts loose
The first necessary action for excessive vibration is to check all fixtures and fittings are adequately tightened. Begin with the set screws of the Trimmer Head (as this produces the most movement) and ensure they are adequately tightened. Next, check all additional bolts and nuts, including engine bolts. If any are found to be missing, replacements are readily available from our parts website: Power Spares.
- Trimmer line lengths are substantially different
Your line lengths don't have to be exactly equal in length when operating your trimmer; however, the imbalance caused by a substantial difference in lengths can cause excessive vibration. For this reason we recommend always adjusting your trimmer line to approximately equal lengths.
- Broken Trimmer Head
Always check the Trimmer Head for any defects or damage, as this can often cause excessive vibration when operating.
If there is a defect or there is damage evident to the Trimmer Head, this will require replacing - these can be readily sourced, along with a variety of other spare parts, from Power Spares.
Poor Trimming Performance
Lastly, if your HYFT60SP is starting fine, and the engine is running without overheating or excessive vibration, and you're still not achieving the desired cut on your vegetation, it's always worth checking to see if...
- Trimmer Line length is too short!
Though it may seem obvious, the line length can often become shortened through use, and this will reduce the effectiveness of your machine; remember to regularly check your Trimmer's line length and replace as necessary.
