TROUBLESHOOTING
PLEASE NOTE:
⚠️ You MUST read and understand the manual provided before operating your HYBC5080AV
⚠️ All corrective actions should be carried out by suitably qualified persons
If you are encountering an issue with your HYBC5080AV Grass Trimmer, there are several possible solutions that could resolve this for you. Scroll down to see if your issue is listed below, and for the suggested resolution.
Please note - whilst issues may vary, the solutions will often be similar; check to find the issue relevant to your situation.
No Spark
If your Grass Trimmer's spark plug is not sparking, possible causes can include:
- Carbon deposit between electrodes
To resolve the build up of carbon deposits preventing sparking, the simplest solution is - clean your spark plug! Next, ensure that the spark plug gap is correctly adjusted to 0.6 ~ 0.7mm
If this does not resolve the issue - replace the spark plug. See page 26 of your User Manual for further detail.
- Ignition coil defective / flywheel magneto too weak
In the event that your machine's ignition coil or flywheel magneto has suffered a defect, it will require replacing. For assistance sourcing replacement parts, see our dedicated spare parts website: Power Spares.
Weak Spark
If, however, you are getting a spark from the spark plug, but it is not sufficient to produce combustion, see the possible causes and suggested corrective action below:
- Too much fuel in the combustion chamber / contamination in tank
If the combustion chamber has become flooded, this can inhibit the spark plug and ignition. First, remove the spark plug and carefully wipe dry. With the spark plug removed, engage the recoil until the chamber has been drained; replace the spark plug, and refuel.
Alternatively, if the fuel has become contaminated by moisture or particulates, this can also inhibit the spark plug and ignition. To resolve, drain fuel tank and replace fuel.
For correct fuelling procedure, see page 18 of your User Manual.
- Blocked fuel line
Fuel can also become "stale" if left in the tank for extended periods (28> days) - for this reason we always recommend draining the fuel tank if storing your machine for extended periods. Stale fuel will appear darker or "muddier" in appearance, and may even present an odour not typical of normal, "fresh" fuel; if you suspect the fuel in your has become stale, drain thoroughly and re-fuel with fresh, unleaded petrol.
Stale petrol can also cause your fuel line or carburettor to become dirty, which can eventually cause engine failure. To clean the fuel line, first drain your HYBC5080AV before disconnecting, and gently run a pipe cleaner through until clear, followed by some clean fuel, before reattaching.
To clean the carburettor, running through with any reputable carburettor-cleaner from your local hardware store will be adequate; however, if the carburettor has become damaged due to poor fuel quality, it will require replacing - this can be arranged under warranty at our service centre, or if you would prefer to do this yourself, replacement carburettors are available from our spare parts website: Power Spares.
If your fuel is not stale, it is possible that your carburettor requires adjustment - this can be arranged under warranty at our service centre. Contact Hyundai Aftersales for further information.
Normal Fuel Supply but Weak Compression
If your fuel appears uncontaminated with adequate supply, but you are still getting weak compression from your Grass Trimmer, this could be due to the following:
- Worn piston rings
If piston rings have become worn, this will compromise compression efficiency, and they will require replacing.
- Spark plug loose / not tightened
If your Grass Trimmer's spark plug has not be properly situated, this can inhibit compression - replace or adjust as necessary.
- Cylinder head loose / not tightened
In the event the cylinder head has become loose, it is likely your HYBC5080AV will require assessment and repair - this can be arranged under warranty at our service centre. Contact Hyundai Aftersales for further information.
- Insufficient valve clearance
If fuel valves have become clogged/blocked, clean as necessary.
Normal Fuel Supply and Poor Spark
If you have ensured the fuel supply is correct, and that the combustion chamber is not flooding, but you are still getting an insufficient spark, this will most likely be:
- Poor contact between spark plug cap and spark plug
Ensure that the spark plug gap is correctly adjusted to 0.6 ~ 0.7mm
If this does not resolve the issue - replace the spark plug. See page 26 of your User Manual for further detail.
Motor Does Not Come Up To Speed
In the event that your HYBC5080V's motor cannot maintain a speed beyond idling, check for the following causes and corrective actions:
- Choke is in "cold start / open" position
Ensure the choke is "open" (OFF); see below, or check your User Manual (pg. 20) for further detail.
- Exhaust system not operating efficiently / clogged air system
Restricted air flow will also cause your engine to function inefficiently; check the exhaust and housing, paying particular attention to the slots and air passages - clearing any debris where found.
- Worn moveable elements (e.g. ignition coil / spark plug cap, flywheel)
Worn elements will inhibit engine turnover - check that no components have deteriorated over time, and replace as necessary. If you are not sure of a specific part name/number - please contact Power Spares and we will be happy to assist.
Power Runs Out
If your HYBC5080AV is running out of power, this will usually be one of two causes:
- Congested ("Blocked") Fuel Lines
Just the same as the WEAK SPARK issue (see above)... fuel lines can become congested or "blocked" by stale fuel:
Fuel can become "stale" if left in the tank for extended periods (28> days) - for this reason we always recommend draining the fuel tank if storing your machine for extended periods.
Stale fuel will appear darker or "muddier" in appearance, and may even present an odour not typical of normal, "fresh" fuel; if you suspect the fuel in your has become stale, drain thoroughly and re-fuel with fresh, unleaded petrol.
To clean the fuel line, first drain your HYBC5080AV before disconnecting, and gently run a pipe cleaner through until clear, followed by some clean fuel, before reattaching.
- Incorrectly gapped spark plug
Ensure that the spark plug gap is correctly adjusted to 0.6 ~ 0.7mm
If this does not resolve the issue - replace the spark plug. See page 26 of your User Manual for further detail.
Noisy or irregular sounding Engine
Even with the anti-vibration function, your HYBC5080AV will be making noise during operating.
However, if you suspect your engine's sound has become excessively loud or irregular in its sounding, it is possible it could be due to the following:
- Incorrect choke lever position
In the event of excessive noise from your engine, the first check should be to ensure the choke lever is correctly positioned to OFF - see below for details:
Ensure the choke is "open" (OFF); see below, or check your User Manual (pg. 20) for further detail.
Leaking Carburettor
PLEASE NOTE:
⚠️In the event of fuel leaking from your machine, cease operation IMMEDIATELY.
If you suspect, or have found evidence of a fuel leak from your HYBC5080V's carburettor, be sure to check the following components and replace as necessary:
- Failure of the non-return valve on the fuel tank lid
First, check the cap on your fuel tank - if the non-return valve has failed this will require replacing. Contact Power Spares for further information.
- Worn carburettor gasket
If your carburettor's gasket has become worn, it will lose effectiveness and can lead to fuel leaking from within the carburettor.
Replacement gaskets and other spare parts can be found via our spare parts website: Power Spares.
