The machine not starting on recoil
Firstly start with some basic checks:
- Ensure that the starting procedure is correct using the user manual.
- Ensure the fuel is fresh and clean and hasn’t gone stale, fuel can go stale after sitting in the machine for a while, if the fuel has been in the machine for longer than 30 days please empty the tank and the carburettor and fill it with fresh fuel.
- How old is the fuel you are using?
- Ensure the oil reservoir is full. Please fill your machine with oil to just above the maximum level. This is important, because there is a very sensitive oil level sensor on these engines, When you start the machine the oil is taken from the sump and thrown around the inside of the engine. When this happens the oil level in the sump drops below the oil level sensor which in turn cuts out the spark for combustion and the engine will cut out
- Ensure that the air filter is not clogged with dust or obstructed in any way, this will choke the engine of air and the engine will not run.
- Ensure the spark plug cable is attached to the spark plug properly. If it is, can you remove the plug cable and see if there are any loose or damaged components in the cable?
- Ensure the OPC cable is adjusted correctly, there should be about 10mm free play in the cable, if it is too loose the machine won’t start. Please ensure that the cable is attached at both ends: on the handle and on the machine. It may be good practice to tighten the cable slightly as it can stretch over time.
If the above is all OK then please try the following:
- The carburettor may be flooded, if it is it will not start. Please drain the fuel from the carburettor for 10-15 seconds. Try to start the machine again.
If that doesn’t work try the following:
- Can you please check the condition of the spark plug and the spark it produces?
- Remove the spark plug cable from the spark plug.
- Remove the spark plug - what is the condition of the plug? Is it dirty, wet or dry?
- Refit the spark plug to the cable
- Rest the threads of the spark plug against a metal section of the engine. DO NOT HOLD THE METAL PART OF THE SPARK PLUG AS THIS WILL CAUSE AN ELECTRIC SHOCK.
- Pull in the OPC cable and secure it in place with a string or a cable tie.
- Pull the starter cable and check if there is a good spark (you should see a clear spark)
- If there is no clear spark then the spark plug may need to be replaced.
If that doesn’t work try the following:
- Remove the spark plug and try putting roughly a teaspoonful of fuel into the engine, refit the plug and try to start the machine.
- If the machine fires up and then cuts out there may be an issue with the carburettor. Try removing and cleaning the carburettor. Please see the following video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac9tzvd7qaA&feature=youtu.be
The machine electrically not starting
- Firstly ensure you are using the electric start system properly using the instructions in the user manual.
- Ensure that you have fully charged the battery, the lawnmower does NOT charge the battery as it runs
- If there is a fast/rapid clicking noise coming from the machine then this indicates a faulty starter solenoid. It will need to be replaced.
- Check the adjustment on the OPC cable, if the OPC cable is lost then the electric start will not work. The OPC cable has 2 functions;
- 1. It completes the circuit for the spark plug to spark.
- 2. It completes the circuit for the electric start to start the machine
If the OPC cable is loose it will only allow the spark plug circuit to be completed and the electric start will not work but the recoil will. The OPC cable needs to be tight enough to engage both functions
If the machine will still not start after adjusting the OPC cable please watch the attached video for a more in-depth diagnosis of electrical start issues.

The machine won't collect grass
- Ensure the mulching plug has been removed
- Ensure you have removed the side chute
- If the grass is wet when you cut it, it will clump together and block the opening to the grass collector, you will need to remove the grass collector and clear the cuttings
- Ensure the machine is running at full speed, If the blade is spinning too slowly it will not create enough suction to push the grass into the collector
- Has the blade been damaged in any way? If the blade has been damaged it will throw the grass in a different direction than it is meant to and it will be left on the lawn
- To avoid any vacuum we recommend using the collection box to a maximum of 70% capacity.
Fuel/Oil Leaking from the machine
- Look for the source of the leak, clean up the leaked oil/fuel and try to identify where it is coming from. Most leaks can be sorted by tightening a clamp/bolt etc
- If you are unsure where it is coming from we will need to see a picture/video of the oil or fuel leak to help us identify the issue and to see if it requires a new part or if it will need to be repaired in our workshop
Self-propel will not work
- Ensure you are pulling on the drive cable to engage the drive
- Ensure the drive cable is attached at both the lever and the gearbox
- Check the adjustment of the Drive cable. If it is too lose then the cable will not pull on the clutch enough to engage the drive. Try tightening the drive cable
If the above is all OK you will have to drain the oil and fuel from the machine and have a look at the underside of the machine
- Check under the machine to make sure there is nothing obstructing the wheels from turning
- Remove the blade and belt cover to expose the belt, pulleys and gearbox.
- Check that the drive cable is attached to the gearbox
- Check that the drive belts are on all of the pulleys
- Check that the belt tension spring is attached to the gearbox and the chassis of the machine
- Check the alignment of all of the pulleys, if any of them are out of alignment then the belt will come off and the drive will not work
